Now I must admit that I am not a big fan of Dennis Lehane but I am a massive fan of "Shutter Island". I think that it has a brilliant narrative with a twisting ambiguous ending that gels with the story perfectly. So when I came across this limited signed edition I simply had to have it. Now this is not a first edition, or first print, it is a limited edition that the publishers produced with a tipped in page that has Lehane's signiture on it.
It was published by Harper Collins in 2003. Another plus is that the pages have deckled edges, and I have always loved the "unfinished" random look of this style.
Here is a synopsis if you have never read it before -
The year is 1954. U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule, have come to Shutter Island, home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient. Multiple murderess Rachel Solando is loose somewhere on this remote and barren island, despite having been kept in a locked cell under constant surveillance. As a killer hurricane relentlessly bears down on them, a strange case takes on even darker, more sinister shades—with hints of radical experimentation, horrifying surgeries, and lethal countermoves made in the cause of a covert shadow war. No one is going to escape Shutter Island unscathed, because nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is what it seems. But then neither is Teddy Daniels.
It was also made into a Hollywood film staring Leonardo DiCaprio, which in my humble opinion was true to the novel, the book is still the better format to experience this scary twisted tale.
